Yachts in St Ives Harbour by John Anthony Park
John Anthony Park 1878-1962
Framed: 47.2 x 58.3cm (18 1/2 x 23 ins.)
In Yachts in St Ives Harbour we see West Pier where the St Ives RNLI station now resides, and the Victorian terraces above; the undeveloped hill side above St Ives a poignant reminder of a how the town looked in these pre-war years.
The painting is a great demonstration of Park’s innate ability to capture the dazzling effect of light, and the reflecting colour and constant movement of water. His contemporary, Sven Berlin, described Park as ".... one of the best of English colourists and unsurpassed as a painter of light: He painted like an angel – simply cathedrals of light."
