Penlee House Gallery and Museum in Penzance is showcasing the life and works of Walter Langley exactly 100 years after the artist's death in 1922. From 25 May until 1 October 2022 the Cornish gallery, which champions the Newlyn School of Artists, is showing 60 paintings in an exhibition entitled 'Painting Between the Tides: Walter Langley 1852-1922'.
This major exhibition will explore Langley’s complete career and will include large scale watercolours as well as oils produced for Royal Academy shows. Less often seen but majors works such as the 1897 'In Faith and Hope the World Will Disagree but All Mankind’s Concern is Charity' have been brought from as far away as Texas for the show.
We are thrilled that two of the works held by Cornish Masters will be included: 'A Nautical Question' from the Alltrop commission which originally brought Langley to Newlyn in 1882, an arrival which ultimately led to the founding of the Newlyn School, and 'The Pink Bodice', a beautiful sensitive painting from 1904.
