Painted in 1901, just a a few years after his return from the Atelier Colarossi in Paris, we glimpse the impact of the French Impressionists; Monet, Sisley, Pissarro and Courbet, whom Birch much admired.
In fact towards the end of his tenure in France, Birch had the honour of exhibiting amongst some of the French greats at the Paris Salon.
Throughout his career, Lamorna Birch never ventured too far from water and even in this mainly pastural scene there is a small brook, almost central to the composition. An equal devotee of fly fishing and painting, and therefore rivers, Birch was also adept in his brushwork handling of trees, which we see demonstrated here and in larger compositions like Winter's Path, Roseworthy Valley.
